The analytic and formal approach distinguishes the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences. Research and teaching is devoted to the philosophical core disciplines (metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, logic, ethics). A special emphasis of the department lies in logic and philosophy of science, where the application of formal methods to philosophical problems, the philosophical analysis of formal methods and interdisciplinarity are regarded as fundamental.

  • On 21 June, 2016, the Senate of the University of Salzburg elected Labor Law expert Professor Rudolf Mosler as the new Chairman; First Deputy Chairman was Assoc. Professor Herbert Wagner and second was Tobias Neugebauer, LLB.oec. Terms last from 1 October, 2016 to 30 September, 2019.
    Starting next academic year it will be obligatory to complete an admissions process for authorization to study secondary school teacher training (general knowledge). There will be an opportunity to complete this authorization process in one of three time slots at the University of Salzburg.
    To promote scientific work, development or inventions, every two years the province of Salzburg awards Christian Doppler prizes of 3,000 euros. In June, Landesrätin Martina Berthold presented the Christian Doppler prize to three scientists.
    The Ars Docendi, State Award for excellence in teaching, assigned by BMWFW on 13 June, 2016. Three submissions of the University of Salzburg are among the 15 shortlisted winners: Assoz.-Prof. Dr. Elias Felten, Dr. Margareta Strasser, as well as Mag. Katharina Ferris and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Uhl.
    Twenty-four pupils from Salzburg and Braunau attended a mathematics workshop in Turkey from 13 to 19 May, organized by the Department of Mathematics, University of Salzburg. In Nesin Mathematics Village they learned that mathematics can be facinating.
    The short film "Innovation through Cooperation" shows the research of the Christian Doppler Laboratory of the University of Salzburg in cooperation with international companies, on biosimilar characterization. The research is about biosimilars, which represent affordable alternatives as successor preparations to expensive biopharmaceuticals.
    The research project "ALRAUNE – Tracking Allergies", together with citizens, researched contributors to developing allergies such as diet, pollution and other factors. Those who are interested can also participate in the research and win great prizes!
    In the summer semester 2016, for the first time the University of Salzburg will offer a Thematic Module. The Thematic Module "Language of Instruction" is aimed at teaching students of all subjects and is a joint project between the Language Centre, the Department of German, the School of Education at the University of Salzburg and the Diakoniewerk Salzburg. The focus of the module is the role of language in the education system in a multilingual society.

    On the 1st and 2nd of July, the international conference "L2 Grammar Acquisition: New Research on Processing Instruction, Input Manipulation and Teaching Implications" will be held. The conference is organized by the Department of English and American Studies (PLUS), together with the cooperation partners CAROLE (Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education) of the University of Greenwich and School of Education (PLUS).
    TIME …is the theme of this year's International Pedagogical work conference in Salzburg, which will take place from the 11th to the 15th of July, 2016. According to Ecclesiastes (Kohelet), the Old Testament preachers said that “there a time for everything…”; A time be born and a time to die, a time to embrace and a time to refrain. And even a time to think about what time really is.
