The World of Papyrus
A Video on Papyrology – produced by Peter Arzt
Contents
Papyrus was the stationery of the ancient world. Finds from Egypt and Herculaneum, more recently also from Greece, Palestine, Syria and Jordan, give us a direct insight in literature and everyday life of Greco-Roman times. Texts from Homer, Plato, Euripides, but also from other authors, whose texts for many centuries were counted as lost, confront us on papyri, many of them more than 2000 years old. Also the life of the simple man left its traces in the papyrus documents: We can read about his birth, his education, his military service, his wedding and family establishment; his tax payments, and finally we can read the obituary brought by the surviving members of his family.
This film gives insight into the history of the origins of papyrology; it shows the difficult and exciting process of papyrus preservation, as well as numerous (in part yet unpublished) original documents from the Erzherzog Rainer Papyrus Collection in Vienna, the largest papyrus collection in the world, accompanied by commentary from a number of the most significant papyrologists of today.
A special part is dedicated to literary papyri.
Today’s problems and perspectives of papyrology.
Papyri from the Vienna collection, mummy portraits, illuminated papyri, reliefs and statues from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and from other collections.
