The Preservation of P.Vindob. G 60120
A Video produced by Peter Arzt
Contents
Papyrus was the stationery of the ancient world. Finds from Egypt and Herculaneum, more recently also from Greece, Palestine, Syria and Jordan, give us a direct insight in literature and everyday life of Greco-Roman times.
This video illustrates the various steps in papyrus-preservation: the papyrus must be moistened before it can be very cautiously unfolded; it is then pressed between wood- and acid-free sheets of paper. The papyrus fibers must be unfolded, smoothed and placed into position, which can be accomplished only through use of an illuminating magnifying glass and microscope. The papyrus fragments are dried and pressed, before one can begin to piece together the puzzle; impurities are removed by means of a scalpel. The restored papyrus leaf is then placed between glass plates.
Observe the original process of the preservation of papyrus P.Vindob. G 60120, a document from the Erzherzog Rainer Papyrus Collection in Vienna, which is the largest papyrus collection in the world. Experience how - after about 1400 years - an unsightly wad of papyrus once again assumes the form of a sheet and reveals its ancient mysteries.
