HomePolitikwissenschaft und SoziologieDepartment of Political ScienceWelcome

to the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg. Its faculty and staff are committed to a high quality education and excellence in research. Annually, the department attracts 100 new students and boasts a total student body of some 500.

Being one of only three full-fledged political science departments in Austria, Political Science at the University of Salzburg offers particular strengths in environmental policy, international trade policy and political economy, political thought as well as a comparative focus on Austria in its European and international context. Moreover, with some 80 courses annually, Political Science offers a wide range of classes on a great variety of topics ranging from political theory, international politics, federalism, to methodology.

Being comprehensive in nature, Political Science at the University of Salzburg offers the full range of academic training from the B.A. to the Ph.D.. To remain an attractive place of study, the Department of Political Science has been proactive by continually adapting its curriculum and course offerings and was the first such unit to implement the Bologna Process.

While the bulk of political science students are drawn from the wider region, especially Salzburg, Upper Austria, Tyrol, and Southern Germany there is also a growing number of ERASMUS and other international students flocking to Salzburg. In turn, our department sends students to some 30 affiliated ERASMUS and other international sites.

The faculty of the department is also committed to public service and regularly offers its expertise to local and national media and hosts events designed to contribute to a public discourse on the body politics. Moreover, the political science faculty has been engaged in numerous projects and undertaking sponsored research for public and private interests. Department members regularly attract outside grants and are consulted by government institutions, NGOs and other third parties. As such the Department of Political Science is a vital and active component of the University of Salzburg.

Unique among Austria’s academic institutions is the Department’s affiliation with the Salzburg Center of European Union Studies – designated a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in 2008 - , most of whose faculty are also members in Political Science. In 2005 the Master program in European Union Studies was launched, offering an interdisciplinary education in European Politics, European Union law, economics and European history. The number of students in that program alone has risen each year; currently totaling 113.
