The English Department offers motivated students a comprehensive range of courses, which encompass the language, literatures, and cultures of the Anglophone world and are geared towards the demands of a modern, intercultural society. With its large selection of exchange programmes inside and outside of Europe, students are given the chance to acquire key skills in an internationally competitive programme that supports creative, critical, and interactive working methods and qualifies our graduates for a wide spectrum of employment opportunities. Possible careers include such fields as teaching and workplace training, international communication and cooperation, journalism and media, cultural and educational management, translation and language instruction, knowledge management, tourism, business, and commerce.

Language
Our goal for all students is an excellent command of written and spoken English (near-native proficiency). Other goals are the acquisition of an academic writing style and complex rhetorical skills and strategies of the highest level. Students will complete a language Placement Test to determine their proficiency level before beginning their studies.
Literary Studies
From Shakespeare to Harry Potter; from Huckleberry Finn to Hemingway and Nadine Gordimer – English literature is world-renowned and fascinating! Literary Studies is the methodical survey of literary texts and their analysis in historical, cultural, and aesthetic contexts. Popular literature, literary texts in new media, non-fictional prose, and the ways in which literary strategies serve as models in a wide range of cultural contexts are all included within the Department’s broad definition of literature. Linguistics Written advertisements, presidential addresses, and pop songs are just as vital to the study of linguistics as is the study of changes to the English language throughout its 1500-year history.
Linguistics
covers knowledge about all modern-day manifestations of English, thereby enabling independent analysis, description, explanation and interpretation of its communicative phenomena and structures. It provides a deeper comprehension of the form and function of British and American English as well as other varieties of English including Global English.
Cultural Studies
Anglophone Cultural Studies offers insight into historical developments and current events throughout the English-speaking world (the British Isles, the USA, Canada, South Africa, India, Australia). Cultural Studies also encompasses cultural phenomena and processes, fostering cultural competences and communicative strategies. By taking courses on real-world applications, students learn to apply their newly developed skills in a variety of career fields. Through participation in interdisciplinary programmes, students in the English Department are given the unique opportunity to analyse and experience literary and practical texts in their visual, musical, performative and kinaesthetic dimensions. |
