Z_GIS is an interdisciplinary Centre of Competence for Geoinformatics, serving the University of Salzburg as well as partner institutions and the geospatial community worldwide. By integrating basic and applied research with graduate education and outreach activities, we are contributing to applying new technologies and developing methods for managing our societies, businesses and environments.

Z_GIS contributes to the worldwide geospatial community through memberships in scientific and professional associations, through project partnerships and as a centre of expertise for industry partners. Our global network of academic partner institutions is a strong platform for exchange of students and faculty, joint research and fostering awareness, motivation and sustainable management of livelihoods.

As an interfaculty department, Z_GIS is aiming at excellence in research, education and communication across traditional disciplines, combining the best from the worlds of natural sciences, social and economic domains as well as technology and engineering.

The University of Salzburg is also partnering in this year's job fair with an information center and special events on site. A perfect way to learn about job opportunities. Visitors can expect a lot of new things in 2017!
    Graduates provide tips for the successful implementation of their business ideas for students in the Salzburger Nachrichten career forum. A linguist who is the founder of the publishing house and a DJ, as well as two computer scientists whose startups have become successful companies, tell what is important in the realization of a good idea.

    To celebrate 70 years of American studies in Salzburg, the Austrian American Association for American Studies and the University of Salzburg will host the conference "Where Are You Going?     Archaeologists discovered the ancient bronze figure from the second century after Christ in the late summer during excavations in the industrial area of Neumarkt-Pfongau.
    On Friday, 27 October, 2017, two identical workshops on the prevention of religious radicalization ("Religiöse Radikalisierungsprävention") will take place in HS 103 of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg (Universitätsplatz 1, Salzburg, 3rd floor). The Workshop I will take place from 10:00 - 12:30; Workshop II from 13:30 - 16:00.
    The reception will take place on Wednesday, 8 November, 2017, at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, Universitätsplatz 1 (Salzburg). 18:15 in the Kollegienkirche (Religionsverbundende Gebet - designed by the Afro-Asian Institute Salzburg). The Reception will be at 19:00 in HS 101 of the Katholisch-Theologischen Fakultät (Universitätsplatz 1, EG).
    16th Development Policy University Weeks: 6 to 16 November, 2017
    After a long period of preparation, it is time now: at the Salzburg location, the Paris Lodron University, Salzburg University of Education Stefan Zweig, University Mozarteum and the Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Edith Stein are opening a joint Zentrum für Pädagogisch-Praktische Studien.
    In July 2017, the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies awarded an annual grant to Assistant Professor Joshua Parker (American Studies) for the project "Flowers in the Snow: Austrian Refugees in Manhattan".
    The university course, "Kuratieren in den szenischen Künsten" is being offered for the second time in 2018 at the University of Salzburg. The course introduces the foundations of curating in theater, dance and music theater.
    The Center for Ethics and Poverty Research at the University of Salzburg, together with the IFZ (Internatioal Research Center for Social and Ethical Issues) and the KHG (Katholische Hochschulgemeinde Salzburg) will be hosting for the fifth time the Lehrgang für Soziales Engagement during the winter semester 2017/18.
    In 2017, the eruption of the Russian Revolution marks the 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the Russia Center of the University of Salzburg, together with the Department of Slavic Studies, is organizing the "Russia 1917" series of events.
    Nationalpark Austria (nationalparksaustria.at) and Nationalpark Hohe Tauern (hohetauern.at) will be hosting the "6th International Symposium for Research in Protected Areas" from 2 to 3 November, 2017, in Salzburg.

    In the minimum time of four semesters, six students of the University of Salzburg successfully completed the course of studies Bewegtes Lernen.
    Since 1979, a congress of the European Society for Herpetology (Societas Europaea Herpetologica) has been held every two years. This year, for the second time in Austria and for the first time in Salzburg, the Congress took place 18 – 23 September, 2017.
    For five weeks, the data science student, Martin Huf, worked in city statistics and researched the population development of the past three years in the city of Salzburg as part of his compulsory practical training. The course DataScience in the Wissensstadt Salzburg is unique in Austria and gives the students the necessary tools for working with "Big Data".
