In memory of Kurt Zopf, a generous supporter of the University of Salzburg, the University endows € 10,000 each year to the Kurt‑Zopf‑Prize. This award is given for internationally renowned publication achievements of research staff members from the University of Salzburg. The prize is awarded annually, alternating between organization units of the University of Salzburg and the medium of publication. The Kurt‑Zopf‑Prize is intended to further support the scientific career of the recipient.

 

In 2019 the focus is on publications from departments of the University of Salzburg covering the follow areas:

Department: areas: humanities, cultural studies and/or social sciences, legal sciences, theology

Possible publishing medium: scientific journal articles respectively monographs (awarded separately)

The basis for selection of the winner is an original scientific publication, published within the three calendar years preceding the award (2016, 2017, 2018; so the application of a paper published in 2018 is possible this year or in the next-but-one announcement 2021 – the choice is up to the applicant).

To ensure a professional and objective evaluation procedure, submissions will be evaluated by a jury consisting of senior, experienced, scientific experts, external to the University of Salzburg.

Award CriteriA:

  • Reputation of the publication media (publisher, etc.) within the research discipline
  • Originality of the purpose of publication (hypotheses, theories, models)
  • Novelty and scientific significance of the findings in the research discipline
  • Quality of the preparation of the subject (methodology, analysis and conclusions)
  • Presentation (content and style)
  • For multiple authors: the applicant(s) contribution to the publication (explanations can be noted in the cover letter; max. 2 pages)
  • Publications originating predominantly in Salzburg are favored

 

Regarding the € 10,000 prize, € 8,000 of the total amount will be allotted for the award recipient’s scientific work at the University. The remaining € 2,000 (pre-tax) can be used at the recipient’s discretion.  The prize can be shared. Presentation of the Kurt-Zopf-Prize will take place in a small ceremony. All applicants will be notified of the final decision.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A habilitated member of the University of Salzburg actively associated with an organizational unit of the University of Salzburg
  • Scientific publication of work within the previous three calendar years (2016/2017/2018).
  • If there is both a print and an online published version with one of the publication dates not falling within the reference period for an application, it is up to the applicant to decide for which year he/she is going to send in an application.
  • A publication can only be submitted once.
  • Only one publication can be submitted
  • Any other award application for the same publication has to be mentioned

  • Abstract of the publication
  • Reviews or other evaluations of the publication, if available

    Researchers in the Department of Geoinformatics at the PLUS have been working for several years on national and international research projects on topics sich as humanitarian management, refugee management, natural disasters as well as COVID-19. They have analysed and evaluated billions of geo-referenced social media data. The results serve stakeholders as an important basis for decision making.
    The 6th annual conference on 6.migration and integration research in Austria took place from the 16 to 18 September at the der University of Salzburg – partly in person, partly online. A resolution for the reception of refugees from Moria was approved.
    As part of its profile „Räume und Identitäten (Spaces and Identities)“ the third annual conference was held on the 30th January 2020 at the Department of Public, International and European Law at the University of Salzburg. The conference with the title „Lebensende in Institutionen ( End of Life in Institutions)" raised a controversial social issue.
    Applications for two dissertation prizes (worth 2,000 euros each) can be made until the 31st October.
