General Information about Theses

Bachelor thesis

Bachelor theses are independently written essays which are prepared while or after participating in a seminar of the Bachelor program Philosophy. However, the lecturer of a seminar may restrict the number of supervised theses. The choice of a topic and the writing of the thesis take place in consultation with and under the guidance of the lecturer.

Master thesis

The master thesis serves as a demonstration of the ability of the student to independently and substantially process a subject in the field of theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy or logic and the philosophy of science in accordance with the current methodological standards of science. The scope of the thesis shall be framed in such a manner as to ensure that the student may reasonably finish the thesis within six months. The student may propose a subject her-/himself or may choose one from a range of suggestions made by the supervisor.

Here you can find a guide to complete the Master's program.

PhD thesis

The dissertation must be written in German, English or another language appropriate to the subject.
It’s permitted to submit a dissertation in the form of a collection of scientific publications (cumulative dissertation), provided that it contains a detailed introduction and, in the case of multiple authors, a statement signed by the co-authors about their respective parts of the dissertation.
The progress of the dissertation must be presented at least three times to an internal professional public (for example in the context of doctoral seminars or departmental colloquia).
With regard to the nomination of the second reviewer, in accordance with § 24 para. 7 of the statute, the supervisor team can submit a ranked list of proposals together with the doctoral student. Separate proposals can be made.  – PhD Program Philosophy.
