HS 4.203 (Unipark) Workshop „Pitch'n'Storytelling“
(Career Center)

HS 4.203 (Unipark) Close to Home: Documentary and Autobiographical Elements in Contemporary British Plays about the Housing Crisis
(Guest lecture Aarhus Institute for Advanced Studies, Universität Aarhus, Dänemark)

"Plays about the housing crisis are interesting test cases for discussing the political potential of theatre in the contemporary medial environment. Being centred on the home, such plays explode the distinction between the private and the political, highlighting how the apparently personal sphere of the domestic is shaped by economic, social and political conflicts and interests. In my talk, I am going to focus on the prominent role of documentary and autobiographical elements – for example in the popular contemporary genre of the verbatim play – in engaging pressing issues such as gentrification, homelessness and social housing policy. I will argue that such ‘dramaturgies of the real’ (Carol Martin) are used both to reflect on the state of early 21st-century British society, and on the specific contribution the theatre can make in analysing and critiquing this state. We will look at examples such as Nadia Fall’s Home (2014), LUNG’s E 15 (2014) and Sh!t Theatre’s Letters to Windsor House (2016) to discuss how playwrights and theatre practitioners put the housing crisis on stage and seek to address their own, and also the audience’s, implications in the crisis."

HS 4.203 (Unipark) Theory session
