What will I learn?

Current discussions about climate change, resource efficiency and renewable energies underline the increasing importance of sustainability in all areas of life. Our society needs experts capable of developing new materials by combining an extensive materials science expertise and a comprehensive understanding of material cycles, sustainability strategies and environmental compatibility. The bachelor’s program Materials and Sustainability not only conveys in-depth knowledge of materials science, but also the basics of social, economic and legal aspects, the consideration of which is essential for meeting current sustainability-related challenges.

Which career opportunities do I have?

The bachelor's program in Materials and Sustainability provides students with a solid basis for an advanced master's program. The interdisciplinary approach will allow students, furthermore, to become outstanding experts, which are able to work in diverse areas of industry, research or administration acting as a bridge between different disciplines. The social and economic need for graduates of science-oriented university studies with excellent expertise in the areas of materials development and resources as well as with a pronounced awareness of sustainability is continuously increasing. Due to the broad and interdisciplinary training, career opportunities for graduates of the bachelor's degree in Materials and Sustainability are very good.

The bachelor’s program offers a unique learning environment in which the balanced relationship between students and an interdisciplinary team of lecturers guarantees a  successful acquisition of skills in theory and experiment. Practical and project-oriented, interdisciplinary teaching and learning methods enable students to grasp the complex interactions between the synthesis and application of materials, on the one hand, and our society, the environment and a sustainable development, on the other hand. Practical and research-based exercises enable students to gain essential experience in working in laboratories and in the use of modern scientific equipment and analysis methods. The city of Salzburg is a hotspot of cultural activity with the surrounding mountains and lakes presenting many opportunities for sport and nature lovers, making it a unique environment to study and live.

How is the course structured?

The scientific fundamentals in chemistry, physics, materials science, mathematics as well as in computer-aided measurement technology and data acquisition will be taught in the first four semesters. Courses in other natural sciences departments (e.g. Department of Geology) and at other faculties (Faculty of Law: Department of Social and Economic Sciences, Department of Public Law, International and European Law) enable students to acquire the necessary basic skills for an interdisciplinary cooperation on tasks in the area of sustainability, material and energy efficiency, resources and material cycles. In addition, the students' attention will be drawn to social, economic and legal aspects. The fifth semester focuses on the synthesis of materials and the characterization of their physico-chemical and functional properties (e.g. in energy conversion or energy storage). In addition, special attention will be paid to the availability of resources and the possibility of using renewable materials or substitutional materials. In the sixth semester, students will work on their final bachelor thesis.

    The Austrian Academy of Sciences has awarded Mag. Dr. Daniel Ehrmann, university assistant and doctoral candidate in the Department of German Studies, four year APART-Grant, which he will start on the1. 3. 2021.During this time he will complete his post doctoral thesis project „Aggregation. Relationaliity and the Constellations of Literature (1650 – 1950). Toward a medium range historical model.

    The project funding programme for research between PLUS and South East Asian partner universities, ASEA-UNINET Call 2021-2022 (Project implementation period: 1st October 2021 - 30th September 2022) is now open.
    Prof. Dr. Jude Lal Fernando, Assistant Professor at the Irish School of Ecumenics at Trinity College Dublin, will be holding lectures in SS 2021 on the topic of "Interreligious Relations in Asia" at the Centre for Intercultural Theology in the area of Religious Studies.
    The programme for the summer semester is now online and the courses will be released shortly. We have improved our entrepreneurship courses. Register by the 14th March 2021.
    The Centre for Intercultural Theology and the Study of Religions and the University of Fribourg are organising an interdisciplinary online conference from the 16th-17th April 2021 (Start 16th April 2021 at 14:15).
