Erasmus Students in Salzburg

COVID-19 Update

Due to the developments, the University of Salzburg stopped classroom teaching since 16 of March and switched to digital teaching formats. All other classroom events, lectures have also been cancelled. These measures are applicable for the whole summer semester.

  • Students who returned back home and continue exchange studies online, but don't come back to Salzburg physically, please deregister your residence in Salzburg.
  • Students considering returning to their home country now, should be aware of any travel warnings that may apply to the journey. Check home countries' authorities's websites to find latest news. It’s the home countries' responsibility to support their students in organising the return back home. 
  • Students are very welcome to stay in Salzburg. This happens on their own responsibility.

Note: Deregistration with the City of Salzburg is possible by email to meldeamt(at)stadt-salzburg.at by sending the completed registration form "Meldezettel" and an ID/passport copy.

The following measures were decided upon:

  • It will no longer be possible to return to lecture halls and seminar rooms this summer semester. Exceptions will only be made in specific areas, such as certain laboratory tasks and some practical sports exercises.
  • Oral and commission board examinations will be available online from next week. A guideline on this will be published as soon as a regulation has been enacted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Other Exams will be able to take place in university buildings in the coming weeks, but under very restricted conditions. We ask for your patience whilst we prepare the correct regulations for such examinations
  • Those who continue the exchange studies online, shall stay in regular email contact with teachers and coordinators in Salzburg and the sending universities.
  • Students who decided to cancel their exchange studies (as well remotly), please inform our office. Keep contact to other office/exchange responsibles, e.g. student dorms/house keepers, etc.
  • Lending and other support services will soon be phased in again. You will find details on the University Library website. Books can be send back by postal services.
  • All offices with personal contact stay closed. 
  • The Department of International Relations can be contacted by email or phone.

Admission

NOTE: The following instructions are valid for Erasmus-Students from Erasmus+ programme countries AND for students coming for an exchange to Salzburg University within the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). Different rules apply for Erasmus-Students coming from Erasmus+ partner countries!

First, please make sure that you have been nominated by your university and that the nomination was sent to the University of Salzburg, International Office (Mrs. Petra Höpfner). This can be done by your coordinator or the International Office of your home university via e-mail, fax or letter and should include your name, e-mail address,  the study period at our institution. Nomination deadlines:
 - 30th of June for the following winter semester/academic year
 - 30th of November for the following summer semester.

Then fill in the Entry Form. The form needs to be sent by postal services to the University of Salzburg, International Relations Office, Sigmund Haffner Gasse 18, 5020 Salzburg or via e-mail to petra.hoepfner@sbg.ac.at. The form requires your univesity's signature and seal, as well as your signature. If you send the Entry Form by e-mail, please make sure to hand in the original document when coming to the University of Salzburg's International Office in person.

The University of Salzburg does not send out letters of acceptance to Erasmus/SEMP students. If you were nominated in the frame of a valid Erasmus/SEMP exchange agreement, within the designated subject codes and quotas, your acceptance as an Erasmus/SEMP student can be taken as guaranteed. Paper versions of acceptance letters will be sent out (upon request) only to students coming from countries whose citizens need a residence permit in order to study in Austria.

Approximately one month before the semester starts, you will receive a Welcome e-mail containing new and important information.

It's very important to complete the online PRE-REGISTRATION before your departure to Salzburg University and to and remember the student identity number assigned by the system, as well as the fixed appointment for personal registration at Salzburg University's Student Service Centre.

After your arrival in Salzburg, please contact first the International Relations Office to collect your Welcome Folder and then proceed to the Student Service Centre where you can enroll for your study programme. 

Upon successful registration, you will receive your student ID. The ID card can be used across campus (e.g. for printing and photo-copying). The card will be activated once the Austrian Student Union Fee (ÖH-Beitrag), currently € 19,70 is paid to the University of Salzburg. After access is granted, all university services are available (e.g. PLUSonline). The ID card has to be validated at one of the various "Service Points" across campus.

During the last weeks of September and February the International Relations Office organizes preparatory German courses and an Orientation Week for incoming exchange students.

Accomodation

The University of Salzburg does not own any student residence halls and can only help you in finding accommodation by providing the following information. The University cannot be held responsible for any problems arising from the below mentioned suggestions.

You can make an inquiry about a room in a student dormitory by contacting the office of the "Austrian Exchange Service" OeAD-Housing (Kaigasse 28/3, 5020 Salzburg; Tel.: 0043 662 8044 4901 e-mail: housing-salzburg@oead.at, http://www.housing.oead.at). Please note that this service requires a € 35 registration fee. Bookings will only be valid after the payment of a € 950 deposit to OeAD-Housing has been made.

You can also find a room by contacting one of the student dormitories yourself. There is a list of all available dormitories by visiting the Austrian Student Union website. The ÖH also has created a webpage with different types of accommodation and job offers at http://www.oeh-salzburg.at/service-das-hilft/boersen/wohnungsboerse.

If you don´t find suitable accommodation by means of the above mentioned services, you can of course come to Salzburg and stay in a youth hostel for the first few days. You are likely to find a room in a shared appartment on the spot upon arrival. Although it might seem to be a risky method of searching for accommodation, most students finally succeed in finding a suitable place.

Please contact him/her regarding any academic and study specific questions. On administrative related issues you're welcome to contact the Erasmus institutional coordinator at the International Relations Office of the University.

For the course catalogue, the University of Salzburg and additional information on courses, please refer to thePLUSonline student service platform. It is also possible to search for courses taught in English with PLUSonline.

Learning Agreement

Erasmus students have to send their Learning Agreements before the mobility to the departmental Erasmus coordinator in Salzburg for signature, if possible.

For changes to the Learning Agreement during the mobility students, again, have to contact their departmental Erasmus coordinator in Salzburg.

Learning Agreements after the mobility are equal to the official University of Salzburg transcript of records, which is downloadable via PLUSOnline in German and English (Studeinerfolgsnachweis).


Language Courses
The University of Salzburg generally expects all incoming students to have sufficient proficiency in German. This is not a required qualification; however, all potential students should be aware that the primary language used for coursework at the University is German. If you are not yet at this level or simply would like to brush up on your German, the University offers German language courses through the Department of German and the University Language Center which are taught according to varying levels of proficiency and run the length of each semester. The courses cost between €45 and €120.

German Language Intensive Courses before Semester starts
The University of Salzburg offers at the beginning of each semester intensive language preparation courses in German at two levels: A1 and B1. For more information on the courses, application and registration, please see top of page!

Health Insurance

Exchange students studying at our University must prove that they have a health insurance valid in Austria. Students from EU/EEA countries are required to possess the European Health Insurance Card. Students from countries that have an insurance agreement with Austria should bring along the "A3 form", which is available at the national health insurance institutions of their home countries. All other students are recommended either to purchase health insurance in their home country or to take out a health insurance policy for students (Studierendenselbstversicherung) with the Salzburger Gebietskrankenkasse (5020 Salzburg, Engelbert-Weiß-Weg 10, Tel.: +43 (0)662 8889-0, sgkk@sgkk.at, www.sgkk.at) upon arrival. The cost of this insurance coverage for students is € 58.39 per month (as of 2018).

Liability and Accident Insurance
Liability and accident insurance is included in the Austrian Student Union Membership Fee of € 19.70, which every student is obliged to pay. This insurance coverage is valid for all activities at the University. If you would like further insurance you will have to research other means of coverage yourself.

Buddy-Network

The Buddy-Network is a service offered by the Austrian Students Union (ÖH)_International Branch in Salzburg. You can apply to be matched up with an Austrian "buddy", who will be able to guide and advise you at the beginning of your stay at the University of Salzburg.

    „UNInteressant? – "Ideas that will improve our lives": With this slogan Universities Austria (uniko) is launching an online-campaign, in which all of the 22 public universities will cooperate with the Austrian Science Fund the FWF.
    01.09.-12.09.2020, https://ditact.ac.at. Due to the current pandemic situation the ditact_womens IT summer studies of the University of Salzburg will take place a week later than planned, from the 01.09.-12.09.2020. Most of the courses will be held online.
    The Vice Rectorate for Research, Nicola Hüsing, received five thousand face masks, which were donated by Gebrüder Woerle Ges.m.b.H. in keeping with the motto „SHARING is CARING“ . The face masks were given out to the employees of the University of Salzburg.
    Due to the current situation personal contact with the Psychological Counseling Center is not possible at the moment. We are however available by e-mail, telephone, chat or video chat. Unfortunately, our normal range of workshops cannot take place in the usual way. We would however like to offer the following webinars as an alternative.
    We are gradually learning how to adapt to the Corona outbreak, both in our everyday lives as well as at the university. For us, this means changing to online teaching for the duration of the current semester. Courses and exams held in lecture halls and seminar rooms will not be possible, with exception to some special exams. Regulations for this are currently being drawn up; exceptions are also to be made for selected laboratory exercises and practical sports courses.
    Information of 23rd April 2020: The Minister of Science’s new ruling on special regulations for study law at universities has now been announced, which gives us the opportunity to regulate some important matters. Please note that these regulations have been set for a limited time period (i.e. for this semester, but sometimes even beyond this).
