9 May: Growth Limits as Barriers of Capitalism

Lecture by Birgit Mahnkopf, Berlin, on Thursday, 9 May at 18:00 at the UniPark Salzburg, as part of the lecture series "Global Challenges - Answers to Climate Change".

Im Kapitalismus ist ökonomisches Wachstum unverzichtbar. Wachstum ist das Hauptziel staatlicher Wirtschaftspolitik und jedes Unternehmens; es gilt als Grundbedingung für eine florierende Wirtschaft und für die Stabilität von Gesellschaften. Doch wir befinden uns heute nicht allein in einer „strukturellen Krise“ des Kapitalismus als eines welt-ökonomischen Systems, aus der kein Weg zurückführt – in die Wachstumskonstellation vor Ausbruch der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise der Jahre 2007/2008. Zugleich sind wir mit einer tiefen Krise des Kapitalismus als eines welt-ökologischen Systems konfrontiert – einer Krise, die zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte tatsächlich die Zukunft aller auf dem Planeten lebenden Menschen miteinander verknüpft.  

Birgit Mahnkopf ist emeritierte Professorin für Europäische Gesellschaftspolitik und assoziiertes Mitglied des IPE Berlin (Institute for Political Economy Berlin) an der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin. Darüber hinaus ist sie Mitglied des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats von Attac Deutschland. Sie hat breit zu Fragen der Globalisierung, zur europäischen Integration und zu den Zusammenhängen von kapitalistischer Gesellschaftsordnung und sozial-ökologischen Transformationsprozessen publiziert.

Der Vortrag findet im Hörsaal E.004 (HS Anna Bahr-Mildenburg) im Erdgeschoss, UniPark, Erzabt-Klotz-Straße 1, statt.

    In the latest issue of U-Multirank, the University of Salzburg is represented with the subjects Life Sciences, Information Technology, and Mathematics. In comparison with the other participating universities, these subject areas have often achieved very good rankings.
    In the current Economists' Ranking of the German Handelsblatt, University Professor Florian Huber (31), from the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS), placed 100th place in the ranking for current research achievement and 62nd place in the Young Economists' ranking, which rates the overall research performance of under-40s.
    The orientation events for Erasmus and exchange students who will be attending the University of Salzburg in the winter semester 2019/2020 will take place from Monday, the 16th of September to Friday, the 27th of September, 2019.
    Dr. Therese Wohlschlager will be awarded the Feigl Prize of the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry on lthe 25th of September, 2019, during the 18th Austrian Chemistry Days 2019 in Linz.
    From the labor market to immigration. How have attitudes and ways of life changed in Austria in the last decades? This will be the main focus at the University of Salzburg during the Congress "Everything in Transition? Dynamics and continuities of modern societies." The congress is organized by the Austrian Society for Sociology and will take place from 26 to 28 September, 2019.
    As in the case of the recent European elections, a team from the Political Science Department of the University of Salzburg, together with the digital agency MOVACT, drafted a digital election assistance tool for the 29 September National elections on - the WahlSwiper.
    In order to make it easier for new students to start their studies, the University of Salzburg offers Orientation Days held the last week of September.     The Salzburg Armenologist, Jasmine Dum-Tragut, opens the first exhibition on 31 August, 2019, at the Genocide Museum in Yerevan. The exhibition shows the fate of Armenian prisoners of war in the Austrian prison camps during the First World War.

    The Impact Forum Europe is coming to Salzburg for the sixth time with the topic ESG Regulation - Impact of the EU Action Plan.
    Democracy and the rule of law seem to have experienced better times in Europe. The recent developments in many countries point to a dismantling of the rule of law, fundamental rights and democracy.
