Prize for Innovative Statistics Master’s Thesis

On 24 October, Victoria Racher was awarded the "Förderpreis der Österreichischen Statististischen Gesellschaft" by Statistics Austria in Vienna for her Master's thesis on "Nonparametric Approaches to Approximate Bayesian Computation".

Am 24. Oktober wurde Victoria Racher bei der Statistik Austria in Wien für ihre Masterarbeit zum Thema „Nichtparametrische Ansätze zu Approximate Bayesian Computation“ mit dem Förderpreis der Österreichischen Statistischen Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet. Dabei wurde insbesondere die innovative Kombination verschiedener moderner Ansätze zur validen Analyse komplexer Daten in ihrer Arbeit gewürdigt. Für Frau Racher ist dies bereits die dritte Auszeichnung, die sie heuer für ihre Masterarbeit erhalten hat: Schon die American Statistical Association und die International Biometric Society hatten ihre Abschlussarbeit mit Preisen gewürdigt. Racher hat neben dem Master in Mathematik auch einen Master-Abschluss in Data Science erworben und ist damit die erste Absolventin Österreichs mit diesen beiden akademischen Graden. Aktuell startet sie eine Dissertation im Bereich Statistik, unter Betreuung von Univ.-Prof. Arne Bathke, und in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Anatomie und Zellbiologie an der PMU.

    Researchers led by Salzburg's geoinformatics scientist Christian Neuwirth had already developed and presented a mathematical model for Covid-19 in May 2020 which examines the question of how long and intensively social distancing measures have to be maintained in order to reduce corona deaths further.

    A study carried out by the sleep laboratory of the Faculty of Natural Sciences on the topic of sleep under the direction Prof. Dr. Manuel Schabus is dedicated to the changes in sleep during the Covid-19 lockdown in 6 different countries (Ö, AT, UK, GR, CU, BRA). The fear, which is worrying from a psychological point of view, and which is evident across society, is also reflected in this data: 78% of those surveyed feel threatened or worried by the Covid-19 pandemic.
    Online lecture on the subject of physiology or medicine: November 25, 2020 - 6 p.m. The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will go to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus.

    Online lecture on chemistry: December 2nd 2020 - 6 p.m. Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of one of the sharpest tools in genetic engineering: the CRISPR / Cas9 genetic scissors. With this technology, researchers can modify the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision.
    In many countries the financial resources for investigative journalism are drying up noticeably. The CoViD-19 crisis has accelerated this trend. Smart media policy and public service media can effectively curb erosion.
