Konvention und Kreativität, Ordnungsstiftung und Subversion, Pluralismus und System, Denkform, Marktform, Sprechform – die Kategorie der Gattung berührt grundlegende Fragen von Literatur und Kunst, Philosophie und Populärkultur. In diesem Band werden klassische Positionen der Gattungstheorie zwischen Strukturalismus und Poststrukturalismus erstmals mit prononcierten Stimmen der aktuellen, insbesondere französischen und angloamerikanischen Diskussion in einen thematischen Dialog gebracht. Der Reader enthält Schlüsseltexte zum Thema unter anderem von Peter Szondi, Michail Bachtin, Gérard Genette, Jacques Derrida, Carolyn R. Miller, Gilles Deleuze, Fredric Jameson, Rosi Braidotti, Stephen Greenblatt, Barbara Johnson und Franco Moretti.

Die Publikation gehört in den Arbeitszusammenhang „Theorie und Geschichte der literarischen Gattungen“ am Fachbereich Germanistik der Universität Salzburg.
