Online lecture on the subject of physiology or medicine: November 25, 2020 - 6 p.m. The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will go to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis, nach den griechischen Bezeichnungen für Leber und Entzündung, ist eine Krankheit, die durch Appetitlosigkeit, Erbrechen, Müdigkeit und Gelbsucht gekennzeichnet ist - gelbe Verfärbung von Haut und Augen. Chronische Hepatitis führt zu Leberschäden, die zu Leberzirrhose und Leberkrebs führen können. Eine Virus-infektion ist die häufigste Ursache für Hepatitis.

VlasakNach der Matura am Salzburger BG2 (heute Christian-Doppler-Gymnasium) studierte Reinhard Vlasak Biochemie an den Universitäten Wien und Salzburg. Er dissertierte am Institut für Molekularbiologie der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und wendete sich danach als postdoctoral fellow an der Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Manhattan, New York City dem Bereich der molekularen Virologie zu. Er habilitierte im Fach Molekularbiologie an der Uni Salzburg. Viele Forschungsaufenthalte auf diesem Bereich führten Dr. Vlasak an die Univ. Leiden, Univ. Utrecht, Univ. Kiel, Univ. Hannover, sowie Univ. Cambridge. Sein Spezialgebiet, das sich in einer Vielzahl von Publikationen niederschlug, ist die Molekularbiologie von Influenza- und Coronaviren Glykanen als Virus Rezeptoren sowie die Biosynthese von Glykanen.
