This study claims to be the first in musicology to pursue the topic using a methodically complex and multidimensional approach. It captures the International––especially the European––scene of new (art-)music for the first time transnationally and mediates, starting from Austria, between national cultures of music research and its neighboring disciplines. The concepts of “cultural turns” provide an initial basis, as they have opened up flexible space for interdisciplinary and intercultural activities and given a context for understanding music as practice, which is an important emphasis in the project.

The spectrum of the project’s approaches ranges from exploratory documentary archival work (database) through the sociology of music (quantitative polls, qualitative interviews, and participatory observations) and historiographic approaches (including cross sections, biographical access to specific agents), cultural studies and music analysis of representative “works”, to the analysis of activities in music mediation/education and management.

Audiences of Contemporary Art Music: Brief Report on Audience Surveys at the Festival d`Automne à Paris, Warsaw Autumn, and Wien Modern in the Autumn of 2014

The brief report on our audience research at the three festivals Warsaw Autumn, Festival d´Automne in Paris, and Wien Modern in 2014 is finally out. Our researcher Katarzyna Grebosz-Haring compiled major results of our survey. It is based on the 1,502 returned questionaires. From the large number of findings, only a selection of the results will be presented in this brief report. Among others, the audiences of the three festivals will be described and compared in some detail. The analysis of the characteristic events will only be marginally incorporated. The qualitative content analysis of interviews and observations is not included here. A more detailed version and interpretation of the results will be available in the final project publication (Wolke Verlag) in the summer of 2017.

International and interdisciplinary conference: European New Music Festivals as Agorai: Music, Creativity, Politics and History
This event is conceived and organised by the researchers of the project "New Music Festivals as Agorai…" in cooperation with the programme area "ConTempOhr. Mediating Contemporary Music" at the "Kooperationsschwerpunkt Wissenschaft und Kunst" (University Salzburg/University Mozarteum).

The international conference "European New Music Festivals as Agorai: Music, Creativity, Politics and History" aims to discuss European new music festivals and the international scene of contemporary art music during the last decades in new comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. One main focus will be three main contemporary music festivals in European metropolises: Festival d’Automne à Paris (France), Warszawska Jesień (Warsaw, Poland) and Wien Modern (Austria). Bringing together scholars, composers, musicians and festival organizers in lectures and panel discussions, the conference also takes a closer look at the festivals’ role in recent developments of creative practices. This includes perspectives on their mediating position between contemporary art music, its composers and performers, and the festivals’ metropolitan audiences as well as their transition into an “agora” function in the musical and culturalized "creative city".

The conference addresses the current topics of the project along the following disciplines:

·       Urban studies, city development
·       Creative processes at festival/development of musicians, artists, composers
·       Historical dimensions/developments, national and international

Renown Balzan award granted to our PostDoc researcher Luis Velasco-Pufleau

Luis Velasco-Pufleau won the Balzan Musicology Visiting Fellowship (2015–2016) and in January and February 2016 is resident at the Faculty of Music, University of Oxford (UK) as part of the Balzan research programme: Towards a global history of music ( with his research project "European new music festivals and the emergence of an intercontinental history of contemporary art music".

In October 2014 two researchers of the FWF project (Simone Heilgendorff and Katarzyna Grebosz-Haring) officially started their work as members of the founding and leading team of the programme area "ConTempOhr. Vermittlung zeitgenössischer Musik – Mediating Contemporary Music" at "Kooperationsschwerpunkt Wissenschaft und Kunst" (University of Salzburg/University Mozarteum) ( ConTempOhr was selected during a competitive selection process in early 2014 and since then has been a reliable and stimulating cooperative partner of the research project in the following fields of artistic and academic activities: research work, teaching, accompanying events and development of regional, national and international cooperation with people and institutions in the domains of culture, education and science.

    On 27 April, Ass. Prof. i. R. Dr. Reinhard Rublack passed away. Reinhard Rublack came in the pioneering phase of the University of Salzburg as a graduate theologian (studies, inter alia, Rudolf Bultmann) with Professor Rudolf Gönner from Saarbrücken to the (then) Institute for Education. As early as 1970 he completed his second degree with the interdisciplinary humanities dissertation on "The educational political trend of the 'Salzburger Intelligenzblatt' 1784 - 1806."
    In the fall of last year, our university passed the "college and family" audit. In January, the Federal Minister for Women, Families and Youth, Dr. Juliane Bogner-Strauß, recognized the certification of the PLUS as a family-friendly university.
    The Kurt-Zopf-Förderpreis 2018 was awarded on Wednesday, 24 April, 2019, to the plant ecologist, Stefan Dötterl, the sleep researcher, Manuel Schabus, and the mathematician, Wolfgang Trutschnig. The Salzburg scientists each received prize money of € 5,000 for their outstanding publications.
    The Language Centre of the University of Salzburg celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019. On this occasion, the 21st of May, a training afternoon for the teachers of the Austrian Language Centres/ÖdaF will take place, and following, a celebration.
